OHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday, October 31. (Before Mr F. V. Frazer, S.M.I Drunkenness.-—Three first offenders for drunkenness, including one woman, were each fined ss, iu default twentyfour hours imprisonment, and another male first offender was convioted and discharged, and a prohibition order was issued against him. Vagrancy. John Gorham was charged with being an idle and disorderly person in that he had insufficient lawful moans of support. The man, who had a very bad record, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labour.

Rkmanded. —Thomas Hannan, charged with having at Timaru, on July 5, 1909, stolen eighteen gallons of whisky, valued at £l9 10s, the property of "William Anderson, was remanded to appear at Timaru on Novombor 8.

Breaches of Orders.—William Henry Norgato charged with a first breach of a prohibition order was fined 10s'and costs, in default forty-eight hours imprisonment.—Charles Henry Lasoelles, for having been on licensed premises during the curronoy of a prohibition order was similarly dealt with. Milk and Water.—Wilfred Edward Irons was charged on two informations with having sold milk containing water, the addition of which was prohibited under "the Sale of Food and Drugs Act," 1908. Defendant stated that the milk was not his own, but was bought from another dair/man, and had been delivered by his boy and not by himself. His Worship remarked that it was unfortunate for him, but whether ho bought the milk or not, he was responsible for all the milk he sold, A fine of 20s and costs was imposed on each charge.—William Henry Wright (Mr M'Connelt), on two similar charges was fined in a like amount on each charge. . A Costly Shandy.—Leslie' William Johnstone and Arthur Lemotto, for Avhom Mr Wright" appeared, were charged with having supplied liquor, to wit, shandygaff, to a person already intcxioated, Johnstone being licensee of the King George Hotel and Lemotto an employee. Mr Wright said that the licensee was a particularly careful man, and had been away at tho time of the offence. The intoxicated man had been shielded from the view of the. barman by two sober men. Tho Magistrate remarked that the position was certainly an unfortunate one for the licensee, but the law had to be enforced. Lomotte would be fined 20s, costs and witnesses expenses, in default seven days' imprisonment, and Johnstone would be ordered to pay costs only.

Affiliation.—Hoefa Marquet was charged with the paternity of an illigifcimate child. Mr Flssher appeared for tho complainant. Defendant was adjudged the putative father, and was ordered to contribute towards the child's support at tho rate of 7s 6d per week, to find tho sum of £3 7s Od for its past maintenance, and costs, and to find £IOO security that he would comply with the order, in default six months imprisonment.—John Douglas, who did not appear, was similarly charged, Mr Moeley appearing for the complainaut. Douglas was adjudged the putative father of tho child, was ordered to pay 7s Gd per week towards its support, to pay costs and £2 5s for past maintenance, and to find security in £IOO, in default six months imprisonment.

Maintenance— Harold Cousins, charged with having disobeyed a maintenance order for the support of a child in a receiving Home, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labour, the warrant to bo suspended if ho paid up the arrears, amounting to £9 7s 6d, at the rat© of 5s per week. Failing to Account.—Percy Moncreith Glenie (Mr Alpers) pleaded guilty to_ a number of charges of having received moneys to tho total amount of £55, on behalf of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, and having fraudulently failed to account for tho same. Mr Alpers asked for leniency, as accused bore an excellent character apart from hfs present trouble. Chief Detective Bishop said that the total shortage of accused's accounts was £142, but all the charges had not been preferred against him. Mr 'Alpers said that the man had £2O, and hoped to be able to find another £IOO within an hour. The case was adjourned until the afternoon to allow the money to be found. On resuming in the afternoon Mr Alpers stated that the gentleman who had promised to provide the necessary money had gone out of town and had not yet returned. He asked that accused might be ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. His Worship said that if he could bo certain tho money would bo refunded he would not scud the man to rraol. After considering the matter ho adjourned tho case until 10.15 a.m. on Thursday, in order to allow the money to be found if possible, (Before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M.) Vagrancy. Ella Brunt, a young woman, was charged with being an idlo and disorderly person, in that she had insufficient lawful means of support. She was ordered to be detained for twelve mouths in the Papanui Reformatory Homo. Maintknanoio. ■ —William Pago Scott (Mx Hunt) appeared on remand- on a charge of having disobeyed a maintenance order for the support of his wily and family. Mr Wright appeared for the complainant. Accused, who was considerably over £lO3 in arrears, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended for ono week to allow the defendant to sign a mortgage and to present himself at the Hospital for medical examination to decido upon tho advisability of having a certain operation performed which, it was statod, would cure a future disability.
