OBITUARY.
JOSEPH PULITZER. VANCOUVER, October 30. A message from New York announces the death aboard his yacht of Mr Joseph Pulitzor, proprietor of the "New York World," aged sixty-four years. MR W. H. WHITING. Mr William Henry Whiting, who died this morning at his daughter's residence in Papanui, was born in Rhohampton, Surrey, 7ngland, in 1825 and came to Now Zealand with his wife and eldest son in 1858, in the ship Zoalandia. For a number of .years he did all classes of work in Lyttelton and on the plains, crossing the hills in bullock waggon whenever ho had to leave Lyttelton for work. Later he took a farm on the Lincoln Road at Halswell, living there until about fifteen years ago. He reared a family of live sons and three daughters while on the farm, retiring at the age of seventy-one years. His wife died in 1885. He took a prominent part in local and national politics and' in the early days was a member of some of the local bodies. He .never stood for parliamentary honours, but always took a keen interest in politics and was one of tho first members of the Knights of Labour and of the Progressive Liberal Association. Five, sons and two daughters survive him.
