FIRES.

131G BLAZE AT PETONE [Per Press Association.}

WELLINGTON, August 17

A fire at Petone early this morning destroyed three seven-roomed houses, two of which were owned by Mr George Lee and one by Mr William Lee. Each house was insured for £275, one in the South British Office and the others in the Atlas. The fire started in the house occupied by Mr W- Lee, whose furniture was insured for £l5O in the South British Office. It was totally destroyed, and then the fire spread to an unoccupied house, which was in flames when the brigade arrived. .The third house, occupied bv Mr Bowater, went next, but in this case most of the furniture, which was insured for £IOO in the South British Office, was saved. The brigade was greatly handicapped in its work, as the nearest fire plug was a quarter of a mile away.
