A Pekin message says that Sir Robert Hart, Inspector-lxeneral of Chinese Customs, has definitely resigned. Mr F A. Aglen, Deputy Inspector-Gen-eral, will succeed him. PETROLEUM. The first shipment of petroleum from the Trinidad wells, consisting of 960,000 gallons, has been sent to New York. Several companies are now approaching the expert stage. FRENCH COMPLIMENT TO AUSTRALIA. At the official banquet in connection with the Roubaix exhibition, the Mayor, who is the largest wool buyer in France, said that Australia could teach France many lessons in regard to legislation. Australia needed to advertise her resources in France. BUENOS AYRES HARBOUR. ■ In connection with the contract let by the Argentine Government to Walker and Co. for the construction of the new harbour for £5.500,000, the Government will pay the contractors in 5 per cent bonds, retirable 'on the sale of oertain land. SIR JOSEPH AND LADY'WARD. Lady Ward will launch the battleship New Zealand on the Clyde on June 29. The Cambridge and Birmingham Universities have conferred doctorships on Sir Joseph Ward.
