The Hon T. Mackenzie, Minister of Agriculture, will arrive in Christchurch by the second express this evening. He intends to visit the show at "Waiau to-morrow, and will afterwards go on to Wellington.
On Thursday, at Tompleton, Mr O. F. Hansen was the recipient of a conductor's baton from the choir of the Methodist Church. ' Mr Thomas Blatchford, chief warder of the Terrace Gaol, formerly principal warder at Lyttelton, died, at Wellington this morning from pneumonia. The employees of Messrs Wood. Bros.' flour mills at Addington gathered on Saturday evening for the purpose of wishing Mr Ashby, who is about to take a trip to the Old Country, a safe and pleasant journey. The foreman of the mill, on behalf of the hands, presented to Mr Ashby a travelling-rug and bag, and at the same time wished him a safe and enjoyable voyage and a safe return. Mr John Smith, an old resident of the Prebbleton district, died, on Saturday, after a short illness. Mr Smith arrived in the colonies about thirtysevon years ago. taking up a farm at Broadfields, which he farmed, and also engaging in contract work. He sold his farm about nine months ago and retired, from active work, and went to live at Prebbleton. Deceased was a member of the Broadfields School Committee for many years. He was seventy years of age.
