COUNTY COUNCILS.

WAIREWA. A meeting of the Wairewa- County Council was held on Tuesday; present —Councillors Gebbie (m the chair), Baiday, Feather, Thompson, Buchanan, -and Birdling. The Health Inspector wrote asking if the Council was willing to delegate its powers under the Sanitary Act to the inspectors about to be appointed by the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. It was resolved that consideration should be postponed, and that the chairman of the Akaroa County Council should be asked to convene a meeting of the local bodies interested to consider the matter I lie Public Works Department wrote regarding pound for pound subsidy for lirdling's Mat Road. It was resolved that tenders should be invited for tho work of claying the road in two separate sections. It was resolved that finger-posts should be erected at the junction of Gebbie's Valley and Mam Road, and junction of Western Valley and Mam Road, and junction of Main Road and Tarawera Valley. The clerk reported that crusher-owners had been asked to quote a price to crush stones. TAWERA. . A meeting of this Council was held on March 6; present—Messrs Seymour (chairman), Carter, Craighead, Evans, Johnson and Milliken. A letter ot apology for absence owing, to urgent busiress was received from Mr Manson It was decided to bave fingerposts erected at Lake Lyndon and on the Kowai Bush Road. Five tenders for retopping the Hawkins Bridge were received, and that of Mr N. T.lleyer, £49 10s (labour only), was accepted. A patch of Californian thistle was reported to be growing luxuriantly m the county, and the clerk was instructed to write to the owi.er of the property and draw his attention to it, as it was a menace to tho wholo district.

CHEVIOT. . A monthly meeting of the Cheviot Council was held on Saturday, March Ipresent-Messrs T Stevenson (chairman), T. Meiklo, W. Hodgson and W. Macfarlane. The Department of Agriculture wrote drawing attention to amendments m the Noxious Weeds Act, and the clerk was instructed to renort to the next meeting as to whether "it would be necessary to pass a special order to bring the Act into force in the county. With reference to the Hospital Board's offer to.carry out the sanitary inspection of the district, it was decided to take the advice of thfi Council's representative before delegating the powers. In reply^ to a claim by Mr S. Solomon for £2O for breaking a wheel of his van in the Conway River bed, the Council decided that it accepted no responsibility m the matter. A letter was received from the Mackenzie Town Board agreeing to pay two per cent of the maintenance charge of the Waiau Bridge. The Kaikoura County Council wrote objecting to pay thirty-five per cent, but would pay twenty-five per cent. The Awatero Road Board wrote suggesting that the matter of apportioning the charge should be held over for a year, the clerk was instructed to tako the necesary steps to secure a commission to settle the matter. Leave was granted to Mr W. Macfarlane to carry into next year any unexpended, portion of the grant for Kaiwarra riding. It was decided to ask Mr Palmer, the Council's representative on tho Hosoital Board, to appoint a time for an" interview with the Council to discuss Hosnital and Charitable, Aid Board matters, and especially with reference to securing a trained nurse for the district, to bo subsidised by the Board. It was decided to call ' for tender* for widening Mount Palm ' track to Bft, and for leasing Conway • cemetery reserve for five years. Aci counts amounting to £266 7s 2d were ' passed for payment. The Council then ! sat as the Conway Domain Board. Ibe balance sheet, showing a credit ot hll " §s Hd, was approved. It was decided • to call for tenders for leasing the Do- > main for a further period of five years.

GERALDINE. A monthly meeting of the Geraldine County Council was hold on Thursday; present—Messrs G. J. Dennistoun (chairman 1 ), B. R, Macdonald, A. Kelman, D. Grant, A. Metealf and G. W. Armitage. The registrar of dogs was authorised .to proceed against the owners of alt dogs in the county who failed to pay registration fees. A deputation front Kakahu waited on the Council and' stated there was a desire to secure a system of water-races in the district. There were about 4000 acres to> be and tbey asked what procedure must be taken to set up a water-race district. The chairman explained the routine to be followed, and said it would be necessary to obtain a special loan for the work. A vote of £3 was, made for the Temuka Mechanics' Institute. Accounts for £l7B lis 4d were passed for payment.
