THE WATERWAY.

ON AND OFF THE RIVER. (By JASON.) Below I am publishing a tabulated form showing the respective winnings of the local clubs at regattas this season The lists have been carefully compiled, and should prove of interest to rowing enthusiasts generally : UNION KOWING CLUB.

It will be seen from the above that the number of regattas held this season is up to last year's standard. The prize-money in each case was good, but some of the clubs did not support some of the races which they should have done by making an entry. No new clubs havo started, although one, the Christ-church Amateurs, found it necessary to close its doors. This is to bo regretted. The local clubs showed much enterprise in competing at outside regattas, the Canterbury and Union competing at Otago, Wellington and the championship regattas, while the Sumner Rowing Club sent entries to Wellington. It was pleasing to see the step taken by this latter club, which was rewarded with a first and a second out of two starts at this regatta. The Akaroa Club also sent representatives to the championship regatta at Wanganui, but these were not very successful. There was one thing, however, that was very noticeable, and that was that outside crews did not respond to the progressiveness of Canterbury and Union and return, the compliment by making good entries at our local regattas. Competition in the Maidens' and Youths' events was up to the usual standard, and large entries were made in, these classes. In the Seniors and Juniors, however, this was not the case. Akaroa regatta brought only two entries, _ Akaroa and Union, in the three Senior events, whilst at the Christchurch regatta in the Junior Four Union was the only competitor. The Sumner Club is inviting entries for another single-sculling race for the trophy presented by Mr G. Latirenson, M.P.' Mr G. Lorimer, of Monck's Bay, has donated a trophy for the runnerup. The course will be three-quarters of a mile, against the tide. The committee of the Sumner Rowing Club, at its last meeting, accepted the tender of Mr J. Smith, Redcliffs, at £142, for the erection of the new boathouse at Monck's Bay.
