ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

\ DUNEDIN, May 4. A carpenter named George Marfell, middle-aged, who Jives in Sydenham, , Christchurch, fell from the fluming __ into the river at the Waipori Tunnel works this morning. He fell over 30 feet among the rocks, and was bo seriously injured that he was brought into Dunedin Hospital, where he was found to have sustained a compound fracture of the leg, dislocation or the hip, terrible laceration of the head and severe shoe I*.1 *. The doctor says the man is in a critical condition.
While Mr J. Fitzpatrick, of Leamington, Cheviot, was driving sheep on his : run yesterday he was Kickedby the horse he was leading. Jn turning to force on some sheep the horse kicked him under the shoulder blade, fracturing a rib and causiingsevere bruises. A child of Mr F. Barnes, of Spotswood, Cheviot, was yesterday kicked on the spine by a foaL and rendered unconscious. Dr Saunders was sent for, but on arrival found the child considerably recovered from the temporary concussion. Dr Maude having given a certificate of death in regard to the man Bartholomew Dunlea, who died suddenly at Hackthorne on Monday, an inquest has not been deemed necessary.
A young man named H. Lane was injured through the accidental explosion of a gun whilst he and Robert Wills were out duck shooting on Lake Wainono, near Waimate, on Saturday. Wills applied a tourniquet and stopped the bleeding. It was found that the muscles of the upper arm had been shot away. W. Telford, a young man employed as a ploughman at Rangatira Valley, near Temuka, was knocked down by his horses on Saturday evening and had his face trodden on. He was seriously injured, and was taken to Temuka, where Dr Crawshaw attended him.
