FIRES.

[Pek Press Association.] HASTINGS, August 25. Rats proved directly responsible for an oaitbreak of fire in the two-storeyed residence of Mr Morris Mason. Smoke was noticed issuing from a cupboard under the stairs at eight o'clock last night, and the fire was promptly subdued. Under some lumber was discoyerod a rat's nest, in which was an ignited box of wax vestas, bearing the marks of a rat's teeth.
