The inter-State carnival to celebrate the jubilee of the Australian game commenced in the presence of six thousand spectators. Teams representing the Australian States and New Zealand are taking part. In the match New Zealand v. New South Wales the New Zealanders commenced with the wind in their favour. New Zealand opened with two behinds and then New South Wales, put on three behinds and a goal. The New South Welshmen were, noticeably quicker on the ball and kicked with greater force and accuracy. Pefore the quarter ended Wilkins (New Zealand) kicked two goals, the second one coming through a clever mark and good kick. At the first change of ends New Zealand had a lead of five points. Nearly all through the second quarter | New Zealand was in trouble. New South. Wales finished' the quarter with six goals and six behiiids to~New ZeaZealand's two goals and four behinds. The last two quarters, however, put a different complexion on affairs. New Zealand had much the better of the game, and added seven goals and five behinds. Tne New Zealanders kicked a goal just on time, and secured the victory by a point. The totals were : — New Zealand, nine goals, nine behinds ; New South Wales, <bight goals, fourteen behinds. The victors' improvement was astounding, and their plucky uphill game found great favour with the onlooiiers. . ' . ■ ■
