CHRISTCHURCH HOSPITAL. A YEAR'S WORK.
SHOWN BY STATISTICS. 1 Statistics in regard to the Christi j church Hospital, just published, show that during the year ending March 31 last, there were 1528 admissions to the institution, and 1635 were under treatment. There were 178 deaths, an increase of 57 on the number for the previous year. The percentage of deaths was 10.76. Forty-four of the deaths occurred within seventy-two hours of admission, and a large number died from incurable diseases. Anaesthetics were administered on 946 occasions. difficulty has been experienced in refard to chronio oases, and more beds aye been urgently needed. Of the total number. of cases admitted, 58 of the patients suffered from specific febrile or zymotic diseases, 6 from parasitic diseases, 22 from dietetic diseases, 168 from constitutional diseases, 14 from developmental diseases, 880 from local diseases, 210 from violence, and 160 from ill-defined and non-specific causes. Most of the deaths were due to cancer.- Tha-fc disease, took 26 persons. Cardiac disease account- V ed for 22, chronic nephritis for 15, meningitis 14, and pneumonia 13. All other diseases took less than ten each. One patient succumbed to alcoholism, and four to appendicitis. There were 946 operations under anaesthetics during the year. I The average daily cost ' per patient was 5s 3d, a.nd during the year there were 9936 out-patients' attendances.
