RESULT OF A POLICE RAID.
A VAGRANCY CHARGE. Michael Leonard Hislop, -ho was arrested on Sunday, August 25, as a result of a police raid on an oyster saloon kept by him, was this morning charged before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., a. the Magistrate's Court, with being an idle and disorderly person, in that he was tho occupier of a house frequented by reputed 1 thieves and vagrants. Mr Donnelly appeared for the accused, who pleaded " not fruilty." Detectives Bishon, Kennedy, Ward and Gibson gave evidence, and gave the names of a number ol criminals they had seen frequenting the saloon. Mr Donnelly, in defence, contended that the proprietor of an oyster saloon could not prevent these criminals entering his premises. He submitted that the saloon was in the same position as the public bar of a hotel, and no one would think of convicting a publican because criminals frequented the bar of his hotel. The accused did not give evidence, and the Magistrate, without comment, sentenced him to three months' imprisonment, without hard labour. A charge against the accused of having kept a sly grog-shop was withdrawn, the police offering no evidence.
