[From Our Correspondent.] WELLINGTON, August 13. DUTY ON BOOTS. The member for Selwyn to-day gave notice of his intention to move, when the tariff came under consideration, that the duty on boots and shoes should be 22 per oent ad valorem. STATUTES COMPILATION. - During the course of a discussion in the Legislative Council to-day. on a question raised by the Hon O. Samuel, the Attorney-General stated that the Government hoped to, have the whole of .the existing statutes compiled and issued in four volumes next year. The work hud involved a great deal of labour on the part of the Solicitor-Gen-eral and Mr L. G. Reid, l\is assistant, and he had reason to know that it called for the very highest praise. At present the New Zealand statutes comprise some forty volumes. The new compilation will be heartily welcomed by the legal fraternity. NATIVE LAND PURCHASES. A return presented to Parliament today shows that the area of Native lands finally acquired by the Crown for the year ending March 31 last was 5070 acre 6, making a total area since 1870 of 797,807 acres. Tlie uncompleted ' purchases at March 31 last were 75,879 acres. The amount paid last year was £9125, and the total expenditure since 1870 was £2,033,537.
