THE MIDLAND RAILWAY.
GENERAL APPROVAL. [From Our Correspondent.] GREYMOUTH, July 18. The item in the Financial Statement anent the acceptance of a tender for the summit tunnel is news that will meet with general approval on the West Coast and in Canterbury. A good deal of influence was brought to bear upon the Government for and against the proposal, but, after all, the question was one that required but little consideration. The Midland Railway is far advanced on both sides, and the tunnel is the only work of magnitude that was required to be let to complete a railway that ha 6 been sanctioned by eight consecutive Parliaments. The Premier, having this in view, acted correctly in accepting the tender. He has kept faith with the people of Canterbury, Nelson and the West Coast, and behaved as a shrewd business man, and he deserves the thanks of the colony for having boldly faced the question. To the West Coast the importance of the line can scarcely be over-esti m at cd .
