Mr E. E. Hardoastle, M.A., F.A.S., A.1.A., a native of New Zealand and a distinguished graduate of Canterbury College, Las been promoted to be chief actuary of the Union Central Life insurance Company of America, and has been elected a trustee of the company. Mr Hardcasfcl© began his insurance career in the Government Insurance Department of this colony. Mr W. S. Pratt has been appointed second lieutenant to tho u'-oalston. Cadet Corps t and Mr W. C. Colea captain of the St Albans C^det Corps. The Education Beard thiii morning approved oi : the following appointments: — Addington, Miss B. E. Bowdeu, assistant mistress ; Barry's Bay, Mrs C. Duxbury, niifftor-ess; Hanip.vtead, Mr H. J. Chapman, assistant master ; Kaiapoi, Miss L. Luxton, assistant mistress; Leeston, Mr H. F. Penlingto-n, master; Lyttelton. Miss L. C. Just, assistant mistress; Rangiora, Mr R. J. Thompson, assistant master; Waiau, Mr J. G. Poison, master; Woolston, Mise E. A. Wood, assistant mistress; Woodend, Mr J. E. GlanviUe master. Messrs R. Wilson and W. Watson havo become- members of the Kirwee School Committee, and Messrs W. J. Dickie and A. Drummond members of the Lawiston School Committee. One of the householders recently elected to the> Walthaan Committee was found t:> reside outside tho district, end lias acoordingly resigned. Mr T.
