Captain Edward Lascelles, Of the Third Dragoon Guards, who lias been appointed instructor for mounted infantry in New Zealand, is ptill attached to his regiment, which is about to proceed to India. He is at present in, attendance on the Defence Minister (Sir Joseph. Ward) in England, and will probably cmne out to New Zealand about the time of Sir Joseph's return. Among the arrivals in Christchurch this morning were Messrs X". Hardingbam (London), W. F. Farley (Wellington), and James Edgar (Dunedin). The position of Under-Secreta-ry of Native Affairs, which became vacant some months ago by the resignation of Mr Justice Edwards, has be&n filled by the appointment of Mr T. W. Fisher, formerly agent for West Coast settlement reserves and president of the Aotea Maori Land Council, New Plymouth, and who some little time ago was appointed a Judge of the Native Land Court. , • Major M'Kenzi© and Drs Atkinson and Durham arrived from Sydney by the s.s.
