ATTEMPTED ESCAPE FROM GAOL.

MAGISTRATE'S COURT PROCEEDINGS. At the Lyttelton Magitrate's Court tills morning, before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., Albert Good, a prisoner in Lyttelton, Gaol, was- oaarged with having on December 14 attempted to escape from lawful custody. He pleaded guilty under provocation. Mr Bishop : Wharf) was tne provocation? The aocused said that he did not reoeive proper treatment from the dootor. Hh© was suffering from a serious complaint, and was not being treated properly. Mr Bishop said that aocused waa not to be the judge of that, any more than a free man. A man who plaoed himself in the hands of a doctor had to submit to the doctor's treatment. The aocused said he was cent to work when he was physically unfit. Mr Bishop asked if *_he had. complained to the visiting Justices. The accused said he had not. He had merely made thie attempt to have his .complaiint brought before the Magisteate. Mr M. M. Cleary, governor of the gaol, said that the accused had made a ooonplaint to him about the doctor's treatment. The accused remarked that Dr Little, at Hanmeo*, had sent ham away from there as he was unfit for work. Mr Cleary said tbat the acoused had bean cent from Hammer' on account of _l-health, but tbe dootor at Lyttelton gaol had certified _hat be was fit for work. The main's conduct at Hanmer and at Lyttelixxn had been good, except for the attempt to escape, aTid he had 1682. marks to his cr-edit. He had attempted to escape by ru_tn_ng awiay from the gang wo-kiaug on the Governor's Bay JEto&d. f Mr Bishop asked if the attempt to escape was a mare piece of bravado. Mr Gleaxy said that if the man had wanted' to escape he could hiave done so more easily at Hanmer. .
