" THE GONDOLIERS."

It is a feature of Sullivan's music that when it was written as complementary to Gilbert's words, it was not composed so much with a view to the glorification of his own talent as with the simple purpose of suiting the possible limitations of those to whom its interpretation was to be entrusted. For this reason it is always found to be of easy vocal compass. It loses nothing of character in this clever realisation, and, indeed, very often gains in strength and suggestiveness. Not unnaturally these spefciai characteristics make Sullivan's composition exceptionally suitable for production 'by amateurs, and none of them is better so adapted than "The Gondoliers," in which the Christchurch Amateur Opera Company will make its appearance before a Canterbury audience on October 26. The success, of course,_ will depend upon the individual ability of the performers, but behind lies the gratifying fact that a number of the members of the cast have won success upon the amateur stage in the 'field of comic opera. Associated with the production are a number of the best local amateurs, some of whom the rehearsals have disclosed possess more than a modicum of talent in the direction of stage-craft. The dressing and mounting have received every attention ,and on the accessories has been bestowed a faithful and conscientious attention.
