Captain Young, commander of the Bennington, reports that the top of the lower furnace of one of the boilers blew off, forcing the boiler astern into another, which exploded, destroying the Benm'ngton's inner works. The crew were calm and collected. They manned the pumps, closed the waterti&ufc compartments and flooded the magazines.
Earl Cawdor has wired the British Admiralty's condolences.
(A, boiler exploded on board the American gunboat Bennington, at San Diego Harbour. Over 200 persons were on board, and forty-five bodies have already been .recovered. Most of the remainder were wounded. The hundreds of spectators on the pier and ferry boats saw many human bodies and much wreckage shot into the air and fall in the water. A section of the upper deck of the gunboat was carried away from stem to stern. The Bennington- was beached in a sinking condition. The Bennington's boilers were regarded as weak lately, and were repaired. Thirty-nine persons were killed, twenty-one are missing, and eighty are injured.)
