The Australians began a match against Hampshire at Southampton today, in bright sunshine. A good wicket had been prepared, and there was a moderate attendance. The Hampshire team consists of Hill, Grey, Johnston, Persse, Jephson, Wyett, Llewellyn, Stone, Baldwin, Bowell and Mead. Kelly, M'Leod, Layer and Darling are standing out of the colonial team. Noble won the toss and decided to bat. Duff and Trumper were, as usual, the first partners, and the former had a couple of lives before Hill got him in the slijjs. One wicket for 39. Trumper played a brilliant all-round innings, and wiljh Hill piled on the runs at a great pace. Trumper gave one chance, which was accepted low down at mid-on. He had been batting seventy-five minutes, and his score included sixteen fours. Two wickets for 162. Hill, by hard driving and faultless cricket, compiled his century in one hundred 'and fifteen minutes. (Received July 7, 12.30 p.m.) Hill, after a faultless innings, lasting two hours and five minutes, was dismissed by a well-judged catch .by Bowell at long-off. His score included one six and thirteen fours. Three wickets for 270. Noble, by sound, hard driving, with the assistance of Armstrong, kept the scorers busy until, at 37, the Victorian \yas bowled by Mead. ''Four wickets for 364. The same bowler captured Hopkins first ball, without any addition to the total. Noble completed his oentury in one hundred and sixty minutes, and one run later was caught at cover-point by Mead, who held the ball at a second attempt. Noble, who had given two eha_.oe_, hit twelve fours. Six wickets for 397. Gregory had made 22 when Gehrs joined him, and they kept the field busy, despite changes of bowling, for the remainder of the day. Four hundred appeared at L_e end of four hours' play, and when stumps were drawn the position was six wickets for 513.
