CANTERBURY BOXING ASSOCIATION.

« _ A meeting of the committee was held on Friday, Mr A. T. Washer presiding. Correspondence was read from Ashburton, Timaru and Dunedin with respect to the championship tournament on June 19 and 20. The secretary reported that all the information sought had been supplied, and that he expected five competitors from Dunedin , two from Timaru, and four from Ashburton. Ho understood that Lyttelton would have four x - epresentatives. Including the promised local entries, the number of competitors would be far in excess of anything experienced in connection wjth previous local competitions. So far the promises showed that there would be four competitors in the bantam class, seven in the feather, six in the light, eight in the middle, and four in the heavy. The Inspector of Police wrote enclosing permit for the tournament on June 19 and 20. ' The following officers were appointed :— -Referee, Major Chagey ; umpires, Messrs P. Campbell and H. F. Marsh ; medical examiners, Drs Jennings, Moorhouse," Orchard and Thacker; weighing stewards, Messrs J. F. Grierson and F. E. Hyman; competitors' stewards, Messrs C. T. Aschman and F. N. Johnston; Press steward, Mr A. R. Kirk; stage stewards, Messrs J. R. Evans, J. R. Olliver and J. F. Wachs-maniij^ime-keepers, Messrs F. A. Hornibrook and J. F. Wachsmann. • The president of the New Zealand Association wrote that he approved of the suggestion of the committee that the trophy he had offered for competition should be awarded to the competitor adjudged to have given the most scientific display at the forthcoming competitions. His trophy would take the form of a gold medal. •- The secretary presented an estimate of the cost of the tournament,- and suggested that the charge of admission to the stage should be ss. At a less figure, he said, it was questionable if it were worth the trouble and expense of providing seats on the stage. Past experience had conclusively proved that the profits from this portion of the house were so small as to make' tt doubtful whether the committee was justified in continuing the" stage accommodation. The chairman said there was a section of the public who had consistently patronised the stage, and ho did not think it would be a wise policy to discontinue the accommodation provided for them. The secretary said that, in view ot the time, work and expense expend ::d in carrying, out a competition there was no prespect of securing anything like a fair return in face of the heavy expenditure if the low prices of admission were maintained. His estimate showed that three items alone ran into nearly £60. The public naturally wanted the best sport available, and the committee endeavoured to meet the requirement. But this could not be done for nothing. Competitors coming from long distances very rightly expected their expenses to be paid, and in securing for patrons of the sport competitors from Ashburton, Timaru and Dunedin, the committee was making an additional heavy charge to the expenses. He thought a slightly higher admission charge than last year should bo made. After further discussion it was , decided to adhere to the prices charged at the last tournament, via., stage 4s, dress circle and stalls 2s, pit Is.
