SYDNEY, February 24, There was a large demonstration in the Town Hall to celebrate the Jubilee in New South Wales of the Methodist Conference. The Customs authorities state that two Maori shearers, who were returned by the Warriinoo to New Zealand, were asked to write fifty words in English, which is the usual test, but failed. One of the Maoris who was not allowed to larid at Sydney, states that the Union Company here refused him and his mate single tickets, and they had to take returns. He states that he was tested by the company s officer, in ■reading and writing, but passed no test applied. His mate, when he arrived in Sydney, was locked up on the tower deck, and the Customs, officer applied no education test, but simply said that he could not land, but must go back, adding, "The Union office should not have given you tickets, because . they knew all about it," The Maori can write, and did so in the presence of a Wellington newspaper man.
