THE WRECK OF THE ORIZABA.

PRELIMINARY INQUIRY. United Pkms Association— By Meofiri* Telegraph— 'Copyright. (Received February. 24, 9.18 a.m.) PERTH, February 24. At the preliminary inquiry into the" cause of the wreck of the Orizaba, Captain Archer gave evidence that the weather was hazy, and thickened as he approached land, which was sighted at nine o'clock, and which he could not recognise. He went ahead slowly, and the lead was kept constantly going. The vessel struck at 11.45, but before she struck he sighted a reef, and turned the ship round to take to the sea again. The haze deceived him, and he did not know that he was not north of Rottnest Island and off his courße tilJ pronounced breakers convinced him, Similar evidence was given by th€ officers and seamen. Subsequently the harbourmaster laid charges of reckless and imprudent navigation against Captain Archer for not taking soundings earlier, and attempting to extricate nimself from the position ; and without having sufficient knowledge of the locality, disregarding the sailing directions of the port. The cases will be heard to-day.
