THE SOPHOCLES FIRE.
KABROW ESCAPES FROM SUFFOCATION. United Press Association— By Elcotrio Telegrapli — Copyright. (Received December 21, 9.24 a.m.) PERTH, December 27. The fire on the Sophocle6 originated in the refrigerating storeroom abaft the refrigerating engine-room, and -had a strong hold when it -was discovered. The fire spread to No. 4 insulating chamber, the charcoal fumes preventing successful efforts to oope wifci the flames. The captain and several of the engineers were prostrated, owing; to inhaling the fumes. The whole insulated portion of the bulkhead was ( destroyed. The burnt storeroom contained seventy cylinders of carbonic acid gas, and water ■was kept playing on them all thetime to prevent an explosion. (The fire on the Aberdeen liner Sophocles, bound from Sydney to London, was only •estinguished after the vessel had been flooded. Eight thousand carcases of mutton and 2500 cases of butter were ren■dered absolutely useless. The damage is ftstimated) at £20..000.)
