Pender, J.P-) D-ttrNKENNEss. — Three first offenders were each fined 5s and costs, in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment. Alleged Theft. — Ernest Skilton, on remand, was charged with the theft of a pony gelding, and was further, (remanded till Wednesday next, hail being allowed, the accused! for £50 and two sureties of £25 each. — Harry Wa-t_on 1 alias Williams, alias Finsbury (Mr, Johnston) was charged with having, on December 22, at^ Christchurch, stolen from the Albion Hotel one diamond ring, valued at £7 10s, the property of Mary J. Loudon. M. J. Louden identified the ring produced: as her property. Annie Day, housemaid at the Albion Hotel, said ehe saw a young man like the accused going up the, stairs of the hotel. Evidence was also given that th© accused 1 had sold the ring to -another man for £1. The accused reserved) his defence, and was committed for trial. Keeping a Brothel.— James Duncan and- his wife, Mary Duncan (Mr Leathern) were charged with keeping a disorderly house in Madras Street. Sift-Inspector Dwyer appeared for the pro_ecution 2 and, after hearing the evidence of the police and of a number of residents living in the vicinity, the female accused was discharged with a. caution nnd James Dun-can was convicted andi sentenced to three months' imprisonment. Sunday Trading.— A. Burns, the keeper of a restaurant, was charged with keeping his shop open and exposing goods' for sale on Sunday, December 27. A fine of 5s ' and costs was imposed. The By-laws. — Frederick Howard, the rider of a motor cycle, was charged with omitting, before turning the corner of Liohfield and Manchester Streets., to. keep to the right or off side. He was further charged with furious riding in Lichfield Street. The first ease was dismissed, and on the second charge the defendant was fined £1 and costs. _ . Threatening Behaviour. — Lilian Lane (MP Donnelly) charged Laura O'Brien (Mr Dougall) with threatening behaviour and with throwing atones at her dwelling. The defendant waa committed to the Salvation Army Home until she was prepared! to leave for Wellington. By-laws.— George Wilkin, for riding a bicycle on the footpath, wag fined 10s and costs.— For a similar offence, F. B. Starkey was fined' 5s and costs. Allowing Horses to - Wander.— John H. Gibbs, on two charges or allowing horses to wander at large on* Campbell Street, . Sumner, was fined' 5s and costs in each case.— W. Higham for allowing one horse to wander in Colombo Street, Sumner, was fined 5s and costs.— Similar charges were preferred against Robert Richard, and William I Tbomafc, and each was fined 5s and costs, j
