A man named »Skarfe ? who has resided here for some months, walked into Mrs French's house and knocked her down three times,, The woman struggled desperately. Her upper lip was cut and her clothing torn. open. It is stated that Skarfe threatened her life and endeavoured to reach a knife lying on a table. The children i alarmed the neighbours, who rushed in and secured the assailant. This morning Skarfe was charged with attempted murder, and remanded to Napier. Mrs French was unable to attend. It is understood that the ! accused had keen persecuting her with his attentions for some years past.
