[FKOM Ovn CORRESI'ONDKNT.] WELLINGTON, Nov. ?9. What, is believed- to lie an indication on the part of the Government to effect retrenchment in the -defence service is the closing of the submarine stations at Lyttelton and Port Chalmers. At the end of the year the men. will be transferred to Wellington and Auckland, except a sufficient number to man the electric searchlight plant. [Per Press Association.] The Premier has accepted the_ post of patron of the fund being raised in Great Britain -for the relief of loyalists who suffered by the late South African war, and has undertaken to further the movement in this colony. The secretary of tho South African International Peace Exhibition, writing to Mr Seddon, expresses a hope that th© report is true that he intends to take up political work in South Africa. He says that the country and Mr Seddon have a great future before them.
