THE ELINGAMITE INQUIRY.
+ A CORRECTION. [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Nov. 29. At the Elingamite inquiry yesterday, Captain Attwood. stated that the last occasion when he ordered the engines to be reversed was before leaving Sydney on the last trip. The order was then readily responded to. In the previous report exactly the contrary was erroneously stated. Morrison, fourth engineer of the Elingamite, stated that ot 10.45 on Sunday, he got the order "full speed astern. tie reversed the engines, which gave a half .uraond then stopped.' Ho then heard the ship scraping on the rocks on what seemed to be her after-part. When the engines refused to reverse the chief engineer tried to move the engines ahead. They would not move. He attributed this to the propeller being stopped by something outside the ship. The engines went all right from Sydney. The reversing gear was m good order * Forty seconds after tire order came to go astern water from the after tank came into tbe engine-room. He plugged the air pipes to keep the water out. He said that the engines exhibited ail their power. The propeller must have been held in the rocks after the first bump. The shaft jumped so that they thought the cap bolts and everything had gone. The vessel appeared to strike as he got the order go astern " The engines were absolutely jammed as though something were between the propeller blades.
