WELLINGTON ITEMS.
-♦»-: — [From Oub Cor*eshinpz9t.] WELLINGTON, Oct. 30. With reference to the agitation for an investigation into the drainage system and waterworks at the jtotoriia Sanatorium, the Government has appointed Mr Stewart, Civil Engineer, of Auckland, to examine and report on these matters. A curious sight was seen here yesterday morning, at the spot where a wall connecting the Ferry Wharf with the Queen s Wharf is in course of construction. Between wall and shore there is a few feet of water not yet filled in, and with the pr^ious night's inward tide thousands of small mackerel entered and were imprisoned. A couple of sewers empty their foulnesses into>ais enclosure, and countless numbers 6f fish were evidently ipoisoped, for early this morning they were piled up on the shore edges dead. All day grown-up men attd children were filling baskets, sacks, kits and boxes -with the fish and taking them away. / There was great rejoicing amongst members of the Railways t)epartraent yesterday morning at receiving pay which nas been due for several months past. The Govern* ment Bailways Department Classification. Act, 1901, increased the rates of pay in each division of service, and the -increase,, was to be from April 1, 1902. At -that? time, however, the money had not bejcri appropriated by Parliament and was not available, but last session an Appropriation Act provided the necessary authority, and [ the arrears as from April 1 have 'been; paid.
