The return match between the Australians 'and 1 Yorkshire opened in fino weather, on a soft wicket, and in the presence of an attendance numbering five thousand. Jones, Carter and Armstrong stood out of the visiting team, and WainwrLghb displaced Whitehead. Darling won the toss, and sent Trumper and Hopkins in to face the bowling of Rhodes and Hirst. When Trumper had made three ho was finely caught by Hirst, one hand — one wicket for three. Hill succeeded, only to see Hopkins bowled by Hirst — two wickets for three. Darling filled the breach, . and the outlook soon became brighter. The partnership provided lively cricket, and both men, batted freely, punishing Rhodes and Hirst with equal impartiality. During their association of thirty-five oninutesthey pub on seventy-four. Darling was - the first to go, caught at the wickets 'by Hunter. His score included two Sixes and four fours — three wickets f on seventy-seven. Gregory filled the vacancy, and had totted up sis when he was given out leg before to Rhodes— four wickets for eighty-six. Hill's total was thirty- two when Duff joined him. He added a couple 'before ho jrya caught by Wainwright at mid-on. He was an hour at the wickets, and 1 played 1 admirable cricket. His score. included 1 five fours and two threes — five wickets for ninety-one. Before Duff opened his ac-j count he was anissed by Tunaicliffe in the slips, off Rhodes. Noble, who came to Hi assistance, was less fortunate, as he tamely returned Us first ball to Rhodes, who" held, it — six wickets for ninety-one. Kelly's arrival and departure were equally sudden. The mew-comer glanced 'his second iba-U into the slips, and it was splendidly held' by Tunnicliffe— -seven wickets for ninety-one. Rhodes had taken three wickets in four balls. Trumble followed Kelly in and- put. After Duff had added a single, the newcomer succumbed to a yorier from Haigh — eight' wickets for ninety-two. By this time the attendance had increased to ten thousand. Howell, who was next, added three, and then lifted Haigh into the deep field, Washington taking the catch — nine wickets fo» one hundred. Saunders, the last man, made four, and 1 played Haigh on, and the innings closed for one hundred and sis, having lasted ninety minutes. ■: - Tunnicliffe and Brown opened the Yorkshire innings.
