Professor Kennan Hill, of the United States Geological Survey Office, approached within a mile and a half of Mont Pelee, returning safely. He was terribly alarmed at the remarkable and unique character of the phenomena, which differ widely from any previous volcanic experience. A large section of Mont Pelee's side has disappeared, leaving four immense cavities.
