Tie first industrial dispute referred to the arbitration of the new Court lesulted in » victory for the men. The Newcastle "Wharf Labourers* Union fought to compel the (Hunter Rives Steamship Company to emiploy only Unionists, to ■withdraw the non-Unionists at present employed, and to observe hours and ■wages contained; in the •wx>rking la«w« of the Union. The company contended that it Jhswi a right to freedom of contract and to employ constant labour ! at -weekly wages.
