The present building, from which so many, unihappy persons have been sent to the scaffold or consigned to a living tomb, was erected in 1785, tbe previous courthouse having been ] destroyed in the Gordon Riots five years before. It cost the Corporation, together with the re-building of Newgate, £90,000. .In tho old court, a judge, the Lord Mayor, and several members of the Bar, and jury, were killed by gaol fever, and rue used to be placed about the court to ward' eff infection. . A remims©epoe< of these evil days is to be found in the sweet herbs which are strewn about the Guildhall on the occasion of certain civic elections.
