THE ELLESMERE DISTRICT.

It has been raining incessantly in the Ellesinere district since Thursday, and the rainfall ig the heaviest for seven years. It will do incalculable good, although badly-built grain stacks will suffer. The Selwyn River is up from baak to bank, and has broken over at Buff's, Irwell and Lakeside. At the time of telegraphing rain is falling harder than ever and a few more hours' fall will cause a small flood. Feed will get a great impetus, 1 and stock will benefit thereby. . Later. Rain is still coming down in torrents, and 1 the Selwyn is' in high flood. The bridge" at Ellesmere :s in imminent danger, and the general aspect is causing some uneasiness. It. looks as if it intends, raining for a month. The residents are hoping that the Railway Department will keep a train this side of the river to maintain traffic in view of the possibility of the bridge being swept away.
