TtresDAY, Feb. 18: (Before Mr R. Beetham, S.M.). Drunkenness.—For this offenoej Michael Hughes was fined lGs'and costfi, dn default forty-eight hours' imprisonment.-fAnnie Smith was charged witih drunkenness, and with wilfully damaging property valued at 16s 6d, belonging to the Government. Accused •pleaded guil^, and' was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, with hard labour.'- •■■••- • . Theft of a Bicrcx^.^-Daniel Cooped on remand-, waa charged that on Feb. 13, a/t Ohristchurch,. h,e did steal a bicycle valued at £13, the property of F. N. Adams. Accused, who was defended toy Mr Harv«y, pleaded guilty. Inspector Ellison explained that Cooper lhadi hired t!he 'bicycle on the date named, and had taken it to a dealer's shop, where he was pßUght an the act of selling it. He at on-ce gave up the money which, he 'had, received ifor it. The ownen of the 'bicycle had lost nothing over the transaction. Mr Harvey asked t'het accused should ,'be admitted to probation, and Ms Worship adjourned the case until Saturday morning for the zeport of the Probation Officer^ . AFMMATioif.—Robert Curri© was charged with failing to provide for the maintenance .of his illegitimate child. Mr M'Gonnel appealed for the mother of the child, and Mr Hunt for the defendant. The paternity W8 admitted, awl his Worship made Jn order for the payment of 5s a- week, defendant to find on« surety of £75 for his compliance with the order. A further order was made for the (payment of £5, confinement expenses, at the rate of 10s a month. Maintenance.—Daniel Heggarty was charged- with being £10 18s in arrears on an order directing 'him to pay 10s a week towards the support of his wife. The case was adjournedl for on© month to give the defendant a dhance of paying off the arrears.—On the application of James Scott fMr Donnelly), James Phillips (Mr Byrne) was ordered to pay 2s a week for the maintemauce of Eliza Jane Phillips, <a destitute person.—Francis Partridge, charged with disobeying a maintenance order, was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment with iard labour.
