CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, Feb. 17. (Before Mr R. Beetham, S.M.) Default Oases.— ln the following cases judgment was given for the plaintiffs by default:— J. Ashworth (Mr Smithson) v. P. Clark, claim £8 15s and costs 10s; John Preece v. F. W. Smith, £5 and costs ss. , Maintenance.— Annie Bryenton sued Jessie Shaw for the sum of £4 11s, alleged to be due for the keep of a child entrusted to plaintiff's care by defendant. Mr F. K. Hunt appealed for defendant, for whom judgment was given without costs. , A Disputed Account.— The Reliance Pneumatic Tyre Company (Mr Russell) claimed from B. Saville and Co. (Mr Byrne) £3 12s lOd, the balance of a disputed account. Defendant had received tyres from the plaintiff company as its agent, and the olaim was for the value of tyres supplied. Defendant disputed . the claim, . on the ground that he had been put to expense in. renewing defective tyres supplied to him by the company. His Worship gave judgment for the plaintiff, holding that the defendant had distinctly agreed to pay the account, and was therefore liable. The. defendant had entered' a counter-claim for the amount alleged by him to have been expended in repairing defective tyres. (Before Mr W. W. Collins, J.P., and Mr S. S. Blackbu.rne, J.P.) Drunkenness. — A first offender, who pleaded guilty to being drunk in Lichfield Street, on"Feb. 15, was fined 5s and costs. --Thomas Richards, for the same offence in 'Manchester Street, on Feb. 15, was fined 10s and costs, in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment.— WilHarai Baker, who did not appear, was fined 7s 6d and costs.—Edward Brown was fined 5s and costs for being drunk in Montreal Street on Feb. 15. — -A female first offender, who pleaded guilty, said she was willing to go to the Salvation Army Home for three months, the Bench convicted and' discharged her on that condition.— Another male first offender was convicted and discharged for being dru^k in Colombo Street on Feb. 15. By-Law Cases.— -Harry Thompson and Joseph Sorenson, who pleaded guilty, were each fined 10s and costs for riding bicycles on a footpath. — John Sinclair was charged with "the same offence, and did not appear, and was fined 15s and costs. — John Duncan, who did not appear, was charged with riding a bicycle on the Lincoln Road. A fine of 15s was inflicted.— George Ell was fined 10s for the same offence. > Abusive Language.— Arthur Brasssington was charged with using abusiv-e and insulting language, at Belfast on Jan. 24. Information was laid by George Bull, for whom Mr Cresswell appeared. Evidence showed that accused had used bad language, and the Bench inflicted a fine of £1 and costs. ' \ • Maintenance.— Robert Currie was charged with failing to provide for the maintenance of his illegitimate child. Mr F. K. Hunt appeared for the accused. SubInspector Black asked for a remand until Tuesday, Feb. 18, so that the accused should appear before the Magistrate. The Bench granted 'the request, and bail was allowed in one security of £50.
