A NEW YORK STORY. The following . story from an American paper shows the sort of reputation that the New York police (have gained' under the rule of Tammany-Hall. Of course, one makes due allowance for 'lOie license of the humourist: — "I was beset by a footpad when I was in' New York," said the person who 'is always hiaving adventures. "But I called on a policeman for help." " Did that do any good?" "Oh, yes. I made the poliooman believe that I was the robbsr, and between us we stripped ih& poor footpad of everything he possessed."
