I ♦ CHRISTCHURCH. " Friday, Jan. 3. (Before Mr G. Paylmg, J.P., Mf Sim, J.P., and Mr j. Prudhoe, J.P.) Drunkenness. — A male first offender, who failed to appear, was fined 10s and costs for being drunk in Addington on Jan. 2.— Charles Carlson, John Clifford, Margaret Webster, Sophia Tudbope and Mary Valadore were each fined 5s for drunkenness on Jan. 2. — A male first offender was also fined 53 for a similar offence. Obscene Languages. — John' Curran, charged witih using obscene language in High Street on Jan. 2, was convicted and fined 10s 'and costs. Theft.— Sarah Jane Lennon was charged with stealing frd-»-y/fbsrtOavergham Hotel, on Dec. 26 last, an umbrella valued at lis 6d, thea property of Thomas Knobb. Mr Donnelly appeared for th c accused. The prosecution alleged that on Dec. 26 accused bad- been in a room in which Knott had left an umbrella. Knott bad left at ten minutes past 'ten, and accused left five minutes later, carrying two umbrellas, one of which was tha;fc belpnging to Knott. Thomas Knott, Haughton Stephenson and Louisa. R-avenhill gaVe evidence, and Constable Esson deposed to finding the umbrella in accused's fcoiree. Momo, alias Richard Munro. a Maori, pleadted nob guilty to a charge of having stolen a silver watch, guard- and two keys, ;ralue £4, th)6 jproperty of HenryBrown. At this stage of the case the charge against Hynson was dismissed. Constable Moore deposed that be hjid found tlie waitelv. on Hynson, and bad also arrested Momo, who denied' all knowledge of the offence, but the keys were found on him. Hynson gave evidence as to having bought the watch from Momo, who was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, wiith hard labour.
