TRADES AND LABOUR CONFERENCE.
♦ [Per Press Association.] DUNEDIN, April 12. The Trades and , Labour Congress to-day earned resolutions against the issue of totalisator permits on Labour Day, that. Labour Day shall be a compulsory holiday, and that the Government shall pay all ats employees their ordinary wages on Labour Day. It affirmed the undesirability of New Zealand joining the Australian Commonwealth, resolved that the Government should be urged to 'build workmen's homes in. close proximity to towns and cities, and grant easy facilities to and from them by means of train, tram and boat. It resolved that the Government should be urged to make -provision for compelling all tradesmen taking orders for tailoring to employ tailors or tailoresses, and that such work should be done in the workshops belonging io the firm taking the orders. It also resolved that the Government should be urged to amend the Health Act, and relieve parents of the necessity of making a sworn declaration and the payment of stamp duty when applying for certificates of exemption, and that Municipal Councils should be urged to press forward the municipalisation of trams, gas, electric lighting, baths, lecture-halls and places of amusement.
