POSTAL MATTERS.

TO THB IVDITOIV

■Sir, — A few days ago I saw in one of the Christchurch papei-s a suggestion that persons should be more careful in addressing their letters, arid be sure to give correct street and number. Now, that is all right where streets are named, and where fche houses are numbered. But it will pei«haps surprise some of your readers to know that there are streets in Christchurch and suburbs where, if a street has a name, its name is not displayed, and as for numbers there are none. And now I want to ask a question : Are the pilla i*;bbxe& always reliable as to the t.m? they are supposed to be cleared? I posted letters to Melbourne and Hobart on the Sunday in a pillar-box. The mall did not leave until the express on the Monday, but my letters did not reach their destination bj* the mail they should have gone by. I hope to hear by next mail that, they have arrived safely. * There was Supposed to be two clearances of tlie pillar box before the mail was despatched. And whilst writing c-n thi*s subject, might I suggest, that the postmen, when delivering their letters, should in all oAse, blow a shrill blast on their whistle. Some already do this, and it must prove cf considerable benefit, to themyas well as a crmvenienoe to those- who are' awaiting the delivery. Some postmen don't whistle at- all, but" pass by without giving the slightest notice that they are in the street! This, of coursfe. woulii only apply to quiet- streets and not in the thick of the city. But to the qui-?, streets it would be a gTeat boon. — I am, etc.. Postal reform. Christchurch, April 6.
