[Per Press Association;] ' GISBORNE, May 15. : Mr James Booth, Stipendiary Magistrate for the Poverty Bay district, died at his residence, Roseland, yesterday evening, after a brief illness. He arrived in New Zea-j land in 1852, in cbnnectit>n; with the Church ! Missionary Society, and in 1856 settled; down at Pipirild, on the. Wanganui River, and. engaged in teaching and pastoral pursuits. At the time of the Hauh&u outbreak' in 1864, he arid his" family were made prisoners,' and for three days and nights were kept in constant fear of being imirdered, but^heir lives were spared^ and they escaped, losing everything they possessed. Mi* Booth subsequently took an active part in the fighting against the rebels-, being given military charge of 'the Upper Wanganui. When the 'friendly Natives were assailed at Jerusalem, and ran short of ammunition, Mr Booth, with a Maori crsw, : ' paddled to Wanganui for fresh supplies, and thus saved the allies. For these ser-, vices he was thanked by the Native MinK st«r. In 1865, he was appointed) Magis-: tote at Wanganui, and two years later was actively engaged in the suppression of the Native rebellion in the Patea district, living in constant danger of being murdfired.
