MELBOURNE SPORTING NOTES.
(Received Feb. 27, 1.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Feb. 27. Cornquist covered seven furlongs. in> lniin 35sec. Rowdy joined in after two furlongs had been traversed, but was beaten off. Stand Off negotiated the distance in a second faster time, and Henry galloped nine furlongs in 2min 6sec, the last mile occupying lmin 47iscc. Kenly and Finland covered six furlongs in lmin 21sec, and Sequence, Dandy and Amourette six furlongs? in lmin 19£sec. Sequence did not please the critics. Blunderer galloped six furlongs in lmin 20£sec. Fleet Admiral, accompanied by Fides, negotiated a similar distance on the fan in lmin '23sec. Wait-a-Bjt easily defeated Scorn over one mile and a half in 2min 49sec, and Parthian showing no signs of soreness, traversed a mile and a half with Welfare, the time registered being 2min 49sec. Hautboy beat Lord Rudolph over six furlongs in lmin 22sec, and; Cabin Boy and Coralie spurted a like distance in lmin 21sec. Marie Corelli brushed over five furlongs in lmin s£sec, and Model galloped a mile in lmin 50£sec. A mile and a quarter was covered by 'Disfigured in 2min 22£sec. Seahorse traversed a mile and a half in 2min 45sec. Zoe accompanied him for the first half-mile, and Waterloo for the last mile, and the New Zealand representative showed excellent forml Olaf galloped six furlongs. Eiridsdale has arrived from Tasmania. Watchdog, accomplished the best six-furlongs gallop of the morning, covering the distance in lmin 17£sec; War Gtad galloped a mile and a half on the tan in 2min 52sec. The Newmarket Handicap is causing a good deal of speculation. The present qubtations are:— One hundred to 9 each agst Foret, Cornquist, Watchdog and Sequence, 100 to 7 each Blunderer and Stand Off, 100 to 5 each Veloce and Silver Moore, 100 to 4 each Venganza, Songbird, Jadoo, Saraswati, Amourette, Keyless, Pretorious and Terlinga-. 'xae quotations on the Australian Cup are 6 to 1 each agst Merriwee'and Parthian, 7 to 1 Disfigured, 8 to 1 George Frederick, 10 to 1 each Wait T a-Bit and The Bride.
