* TIMELY ASSISTANCE. A correspondent telegraphs from Picton that the Premier and party, who are now visiting, the Marlborough Sounds in the Hinemoa, had a rather thrilling experiencs yesterday morning. The barque Chittoor ran aground at the entrance to Picton Harbour, and resisted all the efforts of the steamer Mawhera to move her. Fortunately the Hinemoa came upon before the tide had fallen too low, and, passing a rope to the vessel, was able to get her off and tow her to a safe anchorage. It is thought that the Chittoor has sustained no serious damage. THE EDUCATION GRANT. A telegram from Dunedin says that by a reduction in tho allowances to school committees, the Education Board expects to save £795. The Board has resolved to direct the attention of the Minister of Education to the difficulties experienced in meeting the ' requirements of the district, a-nd to urge that the time had arrived to restore the capitation and extra allowance for maintenance, this being rendered absolutely necessary* by the extension of settlement, involving the erection and maintenance of a large number of small schools, for which the present capitation is not sufficient.
