SCHOOL OF DOMESTIC INSTRUCTION.

The annual conversazione of the School of Domestic Instruction was 'held last evening in the Art Gallery, and was attended by a larga number of.the pupils of the school and their friends. The Mayor of Christchuroh presided, and on the platform were Mrs Chrystall, Mrs Heaton Rhodes, Misses_ Col-bome-Veel and • Jack, and Mrs kurstSeager. i Mr Chrystall moved the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, both of which .showed tihe schocl to be in a satisfactory condition. During the year the number.of pupils attending the various classes for cookery, laundry-work and dressmaking had been. largely increased by the attendance of pupils from the various town schools. Weekly cookery classes had been conducted throughout the year at Leeston and Amberley ''by a teacher of the School of Domestic Instruction. In the examination for'cookery certificates held last year under the auspices. of the City and Guilds of London Institute, twelve out of thirteen candidates passed both tie theoretical and practical portions of the .examination, two receiving fin?t-class certificates, and the remainder second class. 'The report drew special attention .to the inadequacy of the present capitation grant, and to the fact that the great increase in the attendance had; strained the financial resources of the committee. ■ ■ ■ .■ Mtsß. D. Harman reported that she had held the annual examination in cookery at the school, and had found the results perfectly satisfactory, both the theory and practical work giving evidence of careful and thorough instruction. Mr Howard, in moving the adoption oi the report, complimented the management on the progress of the school, and suggested ■the addition to the curriculum of classes for teaching cookery to boys as well as to girls. The motion was adopted, and the following were elected a committee of management : — President, the Mayer of Christchurch ; vice-president, Mrs C. Turrell ; commibtee, Mesdames C. Bowen, W. Chrystall, Heaton Rhodes, Broham, Robison, Misses Jack and Colborne-Veel, Dr Anderson, Messrs O'Bryeo Hoare and C. S. Howard ; treasurer, Mr W. Chrystall' j secretary, Mrs Hurst-Seager. The Mayor then distributed the prizes and certificates to the successful candidates, and a short musical programme was given. Songs were rendered by Mrs Burns, Mrs W. Wilson and Mr G. E. March, Mrs W. Chrystall contributing a pianofcre solo. A number of the pupils of the sebcol gave a very interesting cookery demonstration. Cakes, puddings and sweets were displayed for sale, all being the work of the pupils. A collection of exhibits that attracted a good deal' of attention, consisted of numerous specimens of scenes, sponge-cakes, etc., made by school children, while the dressmaking classes showed a stand of children's frocks made in a way that reflected great credit on Mrs Richard Gardner, the principal of the school, and'on her assistants.
