SOME OF THE CANDIDATES.

Mr R. Heaton Rhodes is the son of the late Mr R. H. Rhodes, of Elmwood, and was born at Purau, Lyttelton, in 1861. He was educated first at Mr Turrell's school, Christohurch, and afterwards proceeded to England, and entered the Hereford School. Subsequently he went to Brasenose College, Oxford, where he obtained the degree of Bachelor of Arts. Mr Rhodes has been a member of the Halswell Road Board, and was President of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Mr J. Colvin, who is a butcher by trade, has lived for some thirty years in Westport, of which town he is at present Mayor. As his name implies, he is an Irishman. Mr W. J. Napier, one of the members for Auckland City, is. an Irishman by birth and a barrister by* profession. Arriving in Auckland about thirty-five years ago, when but five years old, he has spent most of the interval in that town. He is chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board, president of the Auckland branch of the Navy League, and he is connected with a number of other local institutions. Mr G. Fowlds, one of the new members for Auckland City, was born in Scotland, and arrived in New Zealand about fourteen years ago. He is in business in Auckland as a tailor and outfitter. Mr A. L. D. Fraser, the Government candidate who defeated Mr M'Lean for Napier, was born in Canterbury — to be precise, In Kaiapoi. He is thirty-seven years of age. Alfred Richard Barclay, barrister and solicitor, is the eldest son of the Rev A. Barclay, of South Canterbury. He came to New Zealand with his parents in 1865. He was educated at Timaru Public School, Christ's College, and the Otago University. He obtained the degree of B.A. in 1878, and later of LL.B. He was admitted to the Bar in 1885. He has taken, considerable interest in educational and university matters. He has been Clerk of the Convocation since its inauguration in 1884. and was appointed Lecturer on Constitutional History and Law at the Otaffo University in 1891, which, position lie still Tibldts. He is a strong supporter of Mr Seddon.
