— — ♦ ; .. .; ' '' The annual laboratory night of the Cfan-. terb'Ury College Engineering Society was i held on Saturday. Mr A. F. Morrison gave a lecture describing the machinery. jHe dealt with tension, compression,! bending jancF torsion, and explained the 'tility and elasticity or various j metals, •giving examples and showing limelight 'rviews in each case. The machinery 'was 1 described, including the ; 20001 b ; tester, the 50-ton testing machine,, the oil |testers, the calorimeter, the steam-engines and' the capabilities of each. In the engi.neering laboratory the machinery was shown at work, and tests were conducted _on iron, bolts, cliains, riveted joints, bicycle; spokes, timber, cement, oil and coal. In the engi'neerihg lecture-room models of various kinds ■were on exhibition, and diagrams, of which there are over 1000 in the school, illustratjing different parts of machinery, and 'sketches explaining the development of tlie steam, engine were shown^ ; At a meeting of the Young Men's Club-, •hold on Friday evening in the Orange Hall, Ashb'urton, a code of rules was adopted^ and it was stated that the. club would begin with a membership of one hundred and thirty: Tlie Mayor presided, and suggested that to raise fluid's to obtain premises' 1 tlie membErff should form themselves , into a company, aad issue debentures at. 4JU each, redeemable 1 when t&e club was in a position^ to redeem- ffhem. .
