AUSTRALIA v. ENGLAND. THE FIRST TEST MATCH. United Press Association — By Electrio Telegraph — Copyrieht. LONDON, June 1. When stumps were drawn for the day the Australians had scored 238 for the loss of eight wickets. LONDON, June 2. Layer and Trumble resumed, to the bowling of Hearne and Rhodes. At the start the batsmen were scoring merrily, 10 being added in' the first ten minutes. The ninth wicket fell for 248. Jones partnered Trumble. Jones had the strike, and scored four, and then lifted one from Heame at long off. The wicket was hard, and appeared to suit the bowlers. • Both Rhodes and Hearne wei'e in great form, and maintained an excellent length throughout. The excellence of the bowling and fielding throughout the innings was shown by the fact that nearly half the overs were maidens. Jones was bowled by Rhodes, not Hearne. The work done by Hearne was splendid, Ms accurate length and spin of . the ball being admirable. Grace and Pry opened the innings of the Englishmen, Jones and Howell being the bowlers. The batsmen played, the bowling with confidence from the start. Jones was no-balled on the first ball, which went close to Grace's head. Then he clean bowled Fry, but the umpire called no ball, and the batsman remained at the wickets. At 26,.. Tranble went on for one over in place of Jones, in order to allow Jones and Howell to change ends. At two o'clock, the board showed the score to be 69 for no wickets. At 73, Trumble gave way to Noble. Two more runs were added, when Grace was smartly caught at the wickets. Fry showed excellent form, batting for half an hour, and was cheered on retiring. Jackson was easily taken, shortly afterwards. The second wicket fell for 92, and the third for 93. At the luncheon adjournment, Gunn was not out with. 3, and Ranjitsinhji not out with 4. On the resumption, Noble and Jones were still the bowlers. Gunn played a ball from Jones on — four for 116. Hayward joined Ranjitsinhji, but in attempting to run, slipped, and the ball being cleverly returned by Darling, he was run out — five for 117. The weather was brilliant, and the wicket played much faster than yesterday. The attendance was moderate. Ranjitsinhji had two chances declined before he had reached double figures. Gregory, in stopping a hard hit to mid-off, damaged a finger, and M'Leod took his place in the field. Before Hayward was out, Ranjitsinhji narrowly escaped being oaught at mid-on by Iredale. He put up a dreadful skyer when his score was at nine, and was then missed by Kelly standing back from the wickets. Runs came quickly, 33 being added in<thirtyfive minutes. The sixth wicket fell for 172. At 147 Trumble displaced Jones, and at 149 Howell took Noble's place. The following are the scores : — AUSTRALIA. First Innings.
