'. ' [ SITMNEE. .... A meeting of the Siunner Borough Gonhcil was held on Wedues^ay; present — I'-he Mayor (Mr E. K. De&con)/ and Counci||pis Graharue, Hulberfc, Kuyhes and Hesfcett. An apology for absence was received from Councillor Hanmer. A letter was read from Mr W. Eollitt,-asMng the Council to cause . an enquiry to be made into the allegations made by Mr ; ,E. R. Peacon,,to the effect that. the. Jafce and Town Clerk had beeu guilty 'of sbufling the roll prior to the election of Mayor, and stating ■ that Mr Deacon had publicly stated hia intention of investigating the matter, bub had not so far fulfilled his promise. The ' Mayor said that he did not think :ife. a matter for tho Council to deal with, that tha late- Council had, held, an" inquiry, which had completely exonerated the )ato May.or> and the fact that the clerk still held office under him was a sufficient answer respecting the clerk. Councillor Heskett said that he heard Mr Deacon promise to apologise if he found the statements wero not true, and he considered, < as a man of honour, he should do so, as . that v/as aU Mr Kollitc required him to do. After a considerable amount of discussion, the letter was received. : > Accounts amounting to £36 12s 5d were passed for payment. The financial report stated that the receipts since last meeting amounted to .£l7 15s 10d; that the credit balance atthe bank on the general account was .£B4-55 3d, and the debit balance on the water account was £V6Q 17s 9d. The Mayor moved tbab the Works Committee skould be requested to report on the cost and. r.d visibility of forming-, clearing and tarring the esplanade from Morton (Street . .to Cave Eock Hotel. This was carried, i Mr T. Wrenn waited on the Council respecting the notice given hitn to have a water meter put on, or the Council would cut off the water. He - said that mauy others were using water for other purposes besides domestic uses,' and said the : ; Councilors must know that water was . being sold by some of those connected, and : that he objected to being, singled bui -by A the Council.: He said thttt he -would be i: quite prepared to put a- meter in providing, the Council, compelled- all others / wh.o' had stand pipes outside to either remove them or have a meter. It was re- ; solved that the Council should go into the whole matter at its .next meeting. Mr J. Carter interviewed the Council with respect to an accident he had had to bis { trap owing to its skidding on the tram i line. He had approached the Tram Company, who contended that they were not liable. It was resolved that the matter should be inquired into. The Inspector was instructed to lay an information against the owners of any cattle wandering at large. The Works Committee recommended that any stone required for projection works along the estuary at Redoliffs should be given to those requiring it. for protection works; that Mr W. Thomas should be paid 3d par load for removing the sand which had accumulated on the esplanade; that the Council Bhould .pay the premium due for insurance on the Council's regular manr that,, a .rate, of la in tie pound should be struck .onfall - : ' ..ratable property in the . borough .for the ' year 1899r1900, and that a special meeting of the Council should bo held on June 7 ' A to. confirm, the same. / The .report >ras adopted. It was resolved "that the Ehgi- ■ neer should he requested to report on any : breaches of the by-laws relating to the ! water supply. ■ >
