j There was a large and representative afc- '. tendance at Messrs H. Matson and Co.'s rooms to-day, when Mr Conway Matson. of- , fered for sale, on behalf of Mr W. Birdling, '. sen. , the Hals-well Estate, which is part of the original Lansdown Estate, one of the , earliest selections in Canterbury. The property is 165 acres in extent, and cut up . into four blocks, exclusive of the homestead, . which was reserved by Mr Birdling. Lot , 1, 40 acres, was started at £40 per acre, and ! at £41 it was withdrawn. Lot 2, 46 acres, \ was passed without a bid, and the property was then offered as a whole, and started , at £40 per acre, but at £43 10s it was passed in. On behalf of Mr Henry Farr, Ms farm of 66 acres at Springston was then put up, with house aoid outbuildings, well served with water-races, etc. Bidding started at £8 per acre, and at £8 10s it was withdrawn. On behalf of Mr A. J, Murray, his property of 964 acres at M'Queen's Valley, Kaituna, was then offered, divided into four blocks. Lot 1, 215 acres, brought a bid of £7 per acre, and at £7 17s 6d it fell to Mr W. A. Gray, of Kaituna. Block 2, 275 acres, started at £6 10s per acre, and at £6 15s it was passed. Lot 3, 364 acres, started at £5 per acre, and at £6 was withdrawn. Lot 4, 110 acres, was passed in at £13 10s per acre.
