BOROUGH- COUNCILS.
& RANGIOR~A. The moflthly meeting of the above Council was held last evening. There were present, the Mayor (Mr E. ft. Good), Councillors Graham, Carmichael, Sarasom, Jennings and Luxton. Leave of absence was granted Councillors Shankland, Keir, Jones and Foster. Correspondence was read: — From the Waimakariri-Ashley Water Supply Board, stating that the Board considered an honourable understanding was come to by the representatives of both bodies at the conference on April 19, 1898, to recommend their respective bodies to accept the conclusions then arrived at, es- I pecially as the conference was expressly held by mutual arrangement, for,, the purpose of fixing a charge for the supply of water to the borough. Also that it was incorrect "to say that the Board's offer was withdrawn before the Borough. Council had time to arrive at a decision. It was resolved to reply that the Council still adheres to its former statements. From the New Zealand Accident Insurance Company, quoting rate for insuring the Council's employees. The matter was held over for a month. From Inspector Broham, in reply to a letter from the Council complaining that the borough by-laws were not enforced owing ,to there being only one member of the polico forca now in Rangiora, stating that the constable who had temporarily been removed would, in all probability bo allowed to return , shortly. From Mr T. O'Shea, Plough Hotel, offering the use of a well on his premises for fire prevention purposes. Referred to the Fire Brigade Committee. The Finance Committee was" empowered to take legal proceedings in all cases of infringement of the hackney carriage and hawkers' by-laws. The Works Committee recommended that another man, with horse and dray, be employed to assist in re-metalling streets, those requiring immediate attention being Victoria ■ Street, High Street west, and the East Beit. Also that the contractors clearing the drains be paid as they complete their work. It was decided to act on the recommendations. The financial .statement sEowed receipts £64 5s Id, and bank credit balance £338 7s lOd. Accounts amounting to £57 16s were -passed for payment. The motion to strike and levy a general rate of threefarthincrs in the £ for the year ending March "31, 1900, was confirmed. The Clerk • was instructed to issue summonses on Tuesday atrainst defaulting ratepayers. The I Council . then scHourcipd. .
